How are you living your “Ideal Life”?
Living in truth, embracing the joy and happiness that’s in me, confronting fears head on, and continuing to grow personally and professionally are ways in which I am living my “Ideal Life”.
Living in truth: Being honest with myself is very important. I love that I call myself out on my nonsense.
Embracing joy and happiness: I have never thought I was especially gifted, but the happiness and joy I have is my talent, God’s gift. It has kept me in an optimistic place and allowed me to believe in myself and take chances.
Confronting fears: Confronting my fears makes me feel powerful and unstoppable. Even when I don’t succeed at the task I still pat myself on the back for trying.
Growing: Continuing to grow as a person and getting a deeper understanding of things excites me and reminds me that there is so much that I don’t know and so much more life to live.
Describe your journey
I feel like I’m just getting started, but so far this journey has been amazing! I was born and raised in Mobile, Alabama with my mother, father, and two sisters. There was so much stability, security, and love in our home. It gave me the freedom as a kid to just be a kid. I did a lot of daydreaming while growing up and those dreams always included me leaving home. From high school to undergrad, from undergrad to grad school, I was always going, pursuing something and always with visions of the future. Starting my own business came with more ideas and more plans. Years went by and I realized I was always in pursuit of something, never really taking the time to just reflect and enjoy. All of the accolades and accomplishments are great, but spending time and cultivating relationships with my family and friends mean a lot more. My family has been so supportive throughout my life. Always loving me and just being available whenever. I want to be there for them and be the support they need. The birth of my nephew, Turner, and niece, Sinclaire, made this even more evident. I never want to be a stranger to them. I want them to know me and I want to know them.
What is the most valuable lesson you’ve learned?
Always, always, put God first. People will always disappoint you in one way or another and that’s OK. We are all human, but God is that one consistent factor that will always be there. That unconditional love, grace, and mercy that shows up in the most amazing ways regardless of whether you “deserved” it or not. To put it simply, when I put God first, EVERYTHING else falls into place.
What challenges did you have to overcome?
My biggest challenges were a lack of structure and discipline in my personal and professional life. I am a spontaneous person by nature, but I have had to reign that in to accomplish my goals and grow my business. It’s ironic because growing up there was a lot of structure and discipline in our household, which I thought was boring. Little did I know it would all come full circle and the structure my parents provided in my childhood would serve as the blueprint for my adult life.
What is your morning routine?
In an effort to be more effective, but still enjoy my life, I recently tweaked my morning routine. It goes a little something like this:
Wake up around 5:30 and spend time with God – talking and listening.
Read the Bible (started doing a verse challenge that a FB friend posted)
Talk with my husband
Exercise (been a hit and miss on this one lately)
Get clean and dressed
It’s regimented, but the structure helps me to get it all in and be productive.
What motivates you?
My relationship with God is a big motivator. It’s important to me that God sees me as a work he can be proud of.
Also, my family is a huge motivator. From my husband to my parents and siblings all the way down to my niece and nephews. My love for them is strong and I want to be someone they can trust and respect.
What would you share with those aspiring to create and live their “Ideal Life”?
First, get a connection with the Creator. Who better to help you live your true purpose then the one who made you?
Once you’ve identified your “Ideal Life” go all in. Pursue it with a passion. Get excited about living that life and let that excitement motivate you.
Lastly, I would advise enjoying the journey. As you begin putting all the pieces together for your “Ideal Life” don’t forget to enjoy the ride and all the little victories that lead to the big one. Reflect on where you were, where you are, and where you’re going.
What’s next for you?
Professionally, I plan to continue growing my real estate portfolio by acquiring some additional commercial property and developing it. I love being in real estate, but I would like to do some other business ventures, maybe a restaurant.
Personally, I would like to dig deeper and spend more time developing my relationship with God, my family, and friends. Having a strong connection with family and friends that’s built on love, honesty, and acceptance is important to me. There may also be a little one in the works for 2016! God willing!
